Martha is Awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Fine Arts

Without question, there are few individuals who have done more to raise the profile of design in people’s everyday lives than Martha Stewart. It is rare to see a business leader who so successfully integrates design strategy into her company’s business strategy. She deserves every design award available–and perhaps it is all these awards that she plans to store in the 3,200 square foot storage building planned for her Bedford estate that was recently approved by the town council. Congratulations, Martha!

From her own blog, The Martha Blog:

“I am so proud and happy to report that I recently received an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID). Many extraordinary designers have passed through this prestigious school’s doors and I was so thrilled to be notified that I was chosen, along with three other distinguished individuals, as a recipient of an honorary degree at NYSID’s ninety-fifth commencement exercises, recognizing my influence and contributions to the word of entertaining and style.”

Martha Stewart on choosing one final meal: “Probably good, fresh eggs…delicious salad from the garden”

Martha seems so relaxed in this delightful interview with Piers Morgan on CNN. In this clip, she discusses what she’d eat (and drink) for her last meal. Of course, we FOMs already knew that eggs were Martha’s favorite food, right?

“If I was very hungry and I was told that I only had an hour?,” she clarified the question. “I probably wouldn’t be thinking about eating, Piers, but…”

“What would you start with?,” wondered the host.

“Probably good, fresh eggs. Delicious salad from the garden,” Stewart shared. “Boiled, scrambled. Just a really good farm butter.”

“And the main course, what would you have?” he followed up.

“That’s my main course,” she concluded.

She’s Back!: MSLO Elects Martha Stewart Non-Executive Chairman Of MSLO’s Board Of Directors

It’s hard to believe that whatever her title is, Martha doesn’t call the shots at her namesake company. Truth is, her role in the company probably dictates that others be dedicated to executive positions, which allows Martha to operate as its chief public representative. Whatever the particulars, I for one am glad to hear that Martha will now be recognized as MSLO’s Non-Executive Chairman of the Board. You go, Martha!

Here’s the part of the news release that I found most interesting:

In December 2011, the Company entered into a strategic alliance with J.C. Penney Company, Inc., which includes a merchandising agreement to build distinct Martha Stewart stores in jcpenney department stores, and to jointly develop an e-commerce site, both of which are expected to launch in 2013.

Sounds like the beloved Martha by Mail catalog may be returning in an online format? It remains to be seen if this e-commerce site will feature only Martha Stewart at J.C. Penney products, or if it will offer products by others that are curated by Martha and her team as was the case with the Martha By Mail catalog.

From PR NewsWire:

Martha Stewart said: “I am thrilled to be elected Non-Executive Chairman of our Board, a group that shares my deep commitment to the Company and its success. I look forward to working closely with our directors and our management team as we focus on the future, capitalizing on the strength of our brand and our amazing customer connection to continue building our business so that it realizes its full and considerable potential.”

Martha talks rap music on The Talk

Love this clip from Martha’s May 14 appearance on The Talk. Martha brought some goodies for the show’s hosts and dished on, of all things, rap music! Seems Martha is not only friends with many rap stars, but is a fan of rap music herself! In the interview, Martha claims that she herself cannot rap–but I ask you FOMs: Do ANY of us believe Martha couldn’t rap if she set her mind to it? I’m certain she’d be excellent!

From YouTube:

Martha Stewart visits The Talk’s New York studio and reveals her secret love of rap music: “I love Eminem, Kanye West & I tried rap with P. Diddy.” Go M-C Martha!

According to Rolling Stone Magazine, Eminem has revealed that he is working on his new album just days after Martha urged him to do so! That’s right, Martha’s command over the rap world is slowly becoming evident. Martha speaks, Eminem jumps–that’s how she rolls! In all seriousness, Eminem has announced that he is starting to work on his first solo album since 2010’s “Recovery”; news that will no doubt please Martha, a fan of rap music.

J.C. Penney CEO Ron Johnson, the former VP of retail operations at Apple who joined the retailer in June, announced a few details about the Martha Stewart shop in the store’s completely transformed “Home World”:

“Our largest are called the stores, like we are going to have Martha Stewart, where it almost had a complete storefront … about 2,000 square feet. And we will do those in Home.”

The new Home World is due to launch March 01, 2013.

JCPenney unveils new home brands

More details about Martha’s new store-within-a-store for J.C. Penney are trickling out. Looks like Martha will be in good company, as J.C. Penney has inked deals with other lifestyle icons like Michael Graves (already at Target), Terence Conran, and Jonathan Adler. Martha is getting star treatment however, with her own dedicated store-within-a-store.

The company is betting hard on Martha Stewart to be a fortune changer. It has already been announced that J.C. Penney has brought on board two former Apple employees who led that company’s successful expansion into retail stores. The launch of Martha Stewart shops at J.C. Penney will be huge, no doubt. Expect to see a major ad campaign to accompany the launch. Go, Martha!

From Home Textiles Today:

JCPenney at its meeting with analysts here Tuesday evening unveiled a host of new brands for the home department, which will be revamped as of March 1, 2013 with a Martha Stewart shop as its anchor. The 20,000-square-foot home area will also include shops or boutiques featuring products designed by Sir Terrance Conran, Jonathan Adler, Michael Graves and Bodum. As for the Martha Stewart shops, executives did not go into detail about merchandise, president Michael Francis said JCP recently reviewed more than 3,000 potential products for the space.

Martha Stewart Fine Furniture Website is on Its Way!

The URL for Martha Stewart Fine Furniture is now live! There is no content yet, and no way to provide one’s email in order to receive updates, but those features are almost certainly on their way. I am certainly excited to see what Martha has in store for us, especially after seeing her speak about it in an interview. As I stated earlier on this blog, I received this reply from Richard Graves, the National Sales Manager for Miles Talbott, regarding the collection’s launch timeline: “The web site information should up and running by June with support hard copy literature following.” Can’t wait to see it!

Martha Stewart’s Mother’s Day

Awww, here are some really cute photos of Martha and family (including Kevin Sharkey) enjoying Mother’s Day together yesterday. Martha certainly appears to be one happy grandmother! Happy Mother’s Day, Martha and Alexis!

From Mail Online (UK):

The veteran broadcaster was positively beaming as she enjoyed a tasty plate of pasta at New York’s Il Cantinori with her one-year-old granddaughter Jude nestled happily into her lap.

The Last Taping of the Martha Stewart Show

The last episode of the Emmy-awarding winning Martha Stewart show, taped at the end of April, aired yesterday on Hallmark Channel. Martha blogged about the taping on The Martha Blog. The taping was followed by a wrap party at EN Japanese Brasserie.

The reason for the cancellation was high production costs. Says Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia president and COO, Lisa Gersh, “Our expensive studio lease is expiring next year, and we will either bring television in-house or find lower cost space, which will significantly reduce our TV operating margins.”

Not to worry, FOMs–Martha will be back on TV when “Martha Stewart’s Cooking School” airs on PBS later Fall 2012.

Says Martha on The Martha Blog:

“On April 24th, we taped the very last episode of my television show, our Mother’s Day show, which airs today on Hallmark. Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May and we have been honoring mothers on this special day since 1914! Ever since my mother, Big Martha, passed away five years ago, Mother’s Day leaves me feeling sentimental. I sincerely miss my mother, from whom I learned so much and who helped shape the person I am today. But, the bright note is that I now have a granddaughter and that cheers me so!”
