Martha gets back to her roots

Martha Stewart will be profiled this Sunday at 8pm on the PBS series “Finding Your Roots”. The host of the show, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. researches Martha’s genealogy and uncovers some interesting facts. Read more about the taping of the segment on Martha’s blog.

Says Martha on The Martha Blog:

“The Professor found it fascinating that many of my ancestors were domestic workers and craftsmen, such as ornamental ironworkers, basket makers, seamstresses, and farmers. Others were entrepreneurs, running a butcher shop, a delicatessen, and even a saloon. It’s clear to see that my genealogy has really formed who I am today.”

Martha vs. Macy’s: MSLO says “Bring it” to Macy’s ceo

In the ongoing suit/countersuit between MSLO and Macy’s related to MSLO’s new partnership with J.C. Penney, MSLO has requested a deposition from Macy’s CEO Terry Lundgren. MSLO claims that Lundgren has unique knowledge of Macy’s handling of Martha Stewart Collection products in Macy’s stores. (You may recall that MSLO’s countersuit alleges that Macy’s demoted Martha Stewart Collection at Macy’s to “loss leader” status, in order to lure customers into stores where they would find Macy’s house brands, which are more profitable for the store, better stocked and merchandised. Read more about the suit/countersuit here.)

No surprise, Macy’s claims  the request to depose their CEO is unreasonable, and in violation of doctrine that keeps CEOs out of court when they do not possess information that can be provided instead by lower-level employees in the same company.

The saga continues. Meanwhile, as reported yesterday, MSLO is already collecting initial design fees for products to be sold at J.C. Penney in early 2013, indicating their confidence that they will prevail in court.

From Bloomberg:

Martha Stewart Living yesterday asked New York State Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Oing to order Macy’s to make Lundgren available for a deposition as soon as possible, saying in a letter that he has “unique, relevant personal knowledge.”

What Martha Wore: White House Correspondent’s Dinner

Has anyone else noticed Martha’s love affair with shoes? Maybe that’s what will be stored in the new 3,200 SF storage facility on her Bedford farm. When necessary, Martha’s practicality wins the day, but when she needs glam, Martha goes for it! The photo above shoes Martha arriving for the recent White House Correspondent’s Dinner wearing Marchesa, and Sandra Lee at a different event wearing the same dress. You can vote on who you think wore the outfit better (a hint: Martha!) by clicking on the link below. You can also watch video of Marchesa-clad Martha tactfully dodging a reporter’s question by clicking here. FOMs, share your thoughts on Martha’s outfit by leaving a comment here.

From E!Online:

Martha Stewart, attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this past week and said on her blog, “Here I am all set to go wearing a lovely beaded dress by Marchesa and shoes by Manolo Blahnik.” Stewart also paired the look with straight hair and minimal makeup.

Martha Speaks (Or Doesn’t Speak): On President Obama and Taxes

Martha is unflappable, as we all know. One certainly doesn’t reach the position that she has without understanding how to handle the media. Recently, while attending the White House Correspondent’s Dinner in Washington, DC, a FoxNews reporter attempted to get Martha to “go there”. Watch this video to see how she diplomatically deflects the reporter’s question. Gotta love Martha!

From FoxNews:

Business owner and television personality Martha Stewart told The Daily Caller that she thinks President Barack Obama has “tried really hard” in his first term but has met “a little opposition.”

The DC asked Stewart at the White House Correspondents Dinner whether or not she thinks Obama is taking the country in the right direction.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Reports Q1 Results

MSLO sees 2012 as the year it will return to profitability. As hard as it may be to believe, the company has been struggling financially for several quarters now. Fortunately, MSLO showed a substantial drop in its operating loss for Q1 2012. The statement posted on PR Newswire has a nice overview of the company’s recent accomplishments in publishing, broadcasting, merchandising, and corporate. So if you’re interested in all that’s going on there, scroll down the page to read after the jump.

What I found interesting is that MSLO is already collecting design fees for the new line of products to be sold at J.C. Penney. Wouldn’t you love a sneak peak at what’s planned there? Exciting!

From PR Newswire:

Lisa Gersh, President and Chief Operating Officer, said, “Our first quarter results were overall better than we anticipated. We believe we are making good early progress in implementing our strategic initiatives to improve performance. We are particularly excited to now have our full print and digital advertising sales teams in place to drive what we anticipate will be improved Publishing results beginning in the second half of 2012. This objective, combined with expectations of continued growth in Merchandising and the benefit of a lower-cost Broadcasting platform, should position MSLO to return to profitability in 2012.”
