Martha’s Interview with Austin Business Journal [video]

Image

Martha Stewart sits for an extensive interview to share her thoughts about business and entrepreneurship. Colin Pope, the interviewer, says that, of the 20-plus interviews he’s taped, this one with Martha is the all-time most requested. The video is 45-minutes of pure Martha fabulousness. Enjoy!

From the Austin Business Journal:

This is an entrepreneur who has amassed a reported net worth of $638 million as she built one of the world’s most recognizable brands, so I was eager to sit down with her last year and extract some business intelligence for aspiring entrepreneurs.

The conversation ran the gamut — from mistakes made in her startup days to how she markets in the digital world. She got in a few laughs about her prison stay, but I was pleased to be a part of almost an hour of straight business talk from someone who rarely goes on about corporate strategy.

Martha on The Today Show: Makes Meatloaf and Discusses Trial

Martha Stewart is interviewed on The Today Show, March 6, 2013

On Wednesday, Martha stopped by The Today Show and, as she regularly does, taped a cooking segment–for Big Martha’s Meatloaf. During her visit, she also spent a moment to sit with Matt Lauer for an very difficult interview. Lauer was pretty tough on Martha–but Martha was unfazed. She answered with typical aplomb, defending her company’s mission to offer products wherever customers want them. She was also characteristically diplomatic, choosing her words carefully to describe her thoughts about Macy’s CEO, Terry Lundgren. Lundgren famously hung up on Martha when she phoned to let him know about the new partnership with JC Penney.

The interview was preceded by this video, a short piece covering Martha’s appearance in court the day before. According to this report, the trial could finish by Friday of this week. If it does not, it may be as late as sometime in April before the judge rules on the lawsuit.

From the transcript of the interview:

Lauer: Do you believe your products in [JC Penney] stores could help turn around that company?

Martha: Well, as I said yesterday, [JC Penney CEO] Ron Johnson is a visionary. Ron Johnson worked very hard on all those fantastic Apple stores. He also had a lot to do with the great success of Target before that. Ron is a visionary. He is trying to reimagine the retail landscape, and that’s a big job. And he has not been given any time at all to do so. It takes a little while to rebuild something like a JC Penney; a monolith like that.

Lauer: We are going to follow this story, Martha. Thank you for coming in this morning. I know it wasn’t easy for you to sit down and do this.

Martha: Well, thank you very much. And I’m going to go home and make meatloaf! (laughs)

Did you Watch Episode 1 of Martha Stewart’s Cooking School?

Did you catch the first episode of “Martha Stewart’s Cooking School”? In this first episode, Martha demonstrated egg basics: how to soft boil, hard boil, fry, and make omelettes. She even provided tips on how to peel a hard boiled egg. After seeing the episode, I’m tempted to attempt soft boiled eggs, which I’ve never tried before. So, FOMs: Tell me, what did you think? (Here in Northern California, episode 2 was preempted for a special event. Episode 2–which covers sauces!–will air next Saturday.)

More From Martha at the PBS Unveiling

Martha proudly takes credit for her enormous contributions in this interview, which the reporter thinks is “cocky”–although he clarifies to say that Martha is “politely cocky, pleasantly cocky, bluntly cocky in a way that indicates there’s a reason she is who she is. Cocky in a manner that clearly states she can back it up.” Indeed, she can back it up!

Also telling was this quote, foreshadowing the priorities of MSLO for the future: “And our business doesn’t match our brand at all yet. It will. But it’s much smaller than our brand. It should be bigger. And it will be.” Sounds like a business plan to me! Go Team Martha!

From the Toronto Sun website:

“We certainly have had an effect on the American home, and I think that we’ve elevated the subject of homemaking and home-keeping to a level much, much, much more respected and more beautiful than ever before.”
